Training Professional Counselors / Counsellors

Below are listed a number of web search links to counseling / counselling, psychology & social work degree programs.

The Masters or Graduate degree is generally the key that will open counseling doors & opportunities for you.

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is the only bachelor degree I know of that is recognized as a professional counseling degree. The BSW however will only open some counseling jobs to you (some hospitals, Child Welfare & perhaps a few others), certainly not the majority of counseling jobs. Any other bachelor level counseling / psychology degree will generally not open doors for you beyond residential work.

It is wise to steer clear of any program that does not have a supervised hands-on counseling placement component to it. It is this that makes it a professional program as opposed to being merely academic. To my knowledge, the Master of Theology / Theological Studies (MTh / ThM / MTS) in counseling does not have a supervised placement, whereas the Master of Divinity (MDiv) in counseling does.

Be aware that many psychology programs are research oriented, not counseling oriented. You want to be sure to enroll in one that has a significant counseling component to it. You'll also need to make sure that social work programs are counseling oriented, not community development or social policy oriented. As well, check out that MDiv programs are related to individual, marriage & family counseling / therapy, not pastoral counseling. Pastoral counseling will generally only get you into hospitals as it is a very different type of training.

It is best to be aware that all counseling / counselling, psychology & social work degrees / programs / schools are not created equal. It would be in your best interest to thoroughly check out a degree / program & school (especially the online programs) before you spend much time & money getting training from them . It would be very sad to later find out they are not recognized, or well recognized, by the counseling agencies with which you would like to get a job. A degree or "so-called" degree is not much good if you can't get a job with it. Each school or program (including Christian programs) will tell you they are recognized in order to get you to register, so it's wise to check them out in other ways. Buyer beware!

One problem with most non-Christian counseling, psychology & social work programs is that they tend to be much more politically correct & intolerant of some Christian values than the general population is. As long as you're prepared to weather this & the potential pressure & contempt that comes with it, there are many excellent non-Christian programs. The bonus of a good Christian program is obviously that it will consciously & intentionally help you to integrate faith with secular counseling theory & practice, rather than you having to do this on your own in non-Christian programs.

Certainly just because a program is Christian based, does not make it a good well rounded training experience that equips you with solid counseling theory, practice & supervision. Some Christian programs are good & some are not. The same can be said of non-Christian programs.

Some counseling / counselling, psychology & social work programs will also allow you to work on a degree on a part time basis. This is particularly useful for those who have families to support via their current job, but would like to work towards a counseling career in the long term. Do a web search placing "part time" in front of any or all of the search phrases below that interest you.

Pursuing counseling training is definitely worth the time & effort if it feels like a fit for how God seems to have already wired you in your personality & gifting tendencies. Do the Myers Briggs or Kiersey questionnaires if you'd like to confirm or nail down your gifting profile & career aptitudes.

Good luck & may you find it to be a blessing. As with anything else, it will not come without it's challenges.

Phone counseling / counselling, Online audio / video, email or LiveType Chat Instant Messaging etherapy sessions are available for working through issues as an alternative to the standard Office appointments we also offer (see Online & Phone Counseling).

In our Resources section we have a number of links, books, articles, essays & seminar notes that may be of help as a supplement to counseling.

Context of our Value Base

Our counseling services are available to both Christians & non-Christians alike (as per our Mission Statement), & for both we integrate our spirituality only to the degree that people request & are comfortable with.  We are respectful of others being in somewhat different places than we are in the life journeys we walk out, & are also aware that many have been hurt or offended religiously by others in their past.

We do not try to force our Christian value base or beliefs on others, although it can at times affect what goals we feel comfortable about being able to work on with others, because there are a handful of moral & spiritual issues where we will not be comfortable in counseling contrary to our beliefs. These issues generally do not tend to come up in most people's counseling though.

We come from a spiritual, biblical perspective so when requested we also function as pastoral counselors / counsellors in addition to being professional counselors, marriage & family therapists.  We are very comfortable with prayer & the inclusion of scripture where this is requested & desired, yet even then it will be integrated only to the degree that people are comfortable with.
